BUYER GUIDES · FROM THE FACTORY
Ordering furniture from China without the horror stories
Every buyer has read a horror story: the deposit that vanished, the container of furniture that matched nothing. Almost all of them trace to skipped checkpoints. Here are the checkpoints, from a factory that lives on repeat customers.
Deal with a factory, not a mystery
The first question to settle: is your supplier the actual manufacturer or a trading company reselling someone else's work? Video calls from the production floor answer it in minutes. So does a visit. A real factory will happily show you frames being built and name its own address; a middleman cannot.
Get everything in writing before paying
Piece, materials, dimensions, production time, packaging, payment terms. In writing, in the quotation. Most disputes are not fraud; they are two honest parties remembering a phone call differently.
Approve a drawing, not a description
Words like "similar to the photo" cause grief. A production drawing with numbers on it does not. Do not let production start until a drawing carries your explicit approval.
For bulk orders, a physical sample is not optional
One sample before mass production converts the biggest risk in the business into a small, cheap step. The sample you sign becomes the legal and practical standard for the whole order.
Demand staged quality checks and photos
Quality control at the end of production can only discover problems after the money is spent. Staged checks: frame, upholstery, finishing, packing, prevent them. Ask for photos or video of your actual pieces before they ship; factories proud of their work send them gladly.
Judge communication before you judge furniture
The best early signal is response quality. Direct answers, real photos, a person with a name who replies quickly even across time zones. Suppliers who go quiet after the deposit were usually vague before it too.
